外國在做電氣設(shè)計的時候很注重這個問題，要想在國產(chǎn)設(shè)備上見到繼電器的機率會低很多。舉個例子來說，當一臺機器的門（也可以是光柵）打開的時候，繼電器就會斷開供電，電路控制主馬達的接觸器斷開，主馬達停止，待門關(guān)上后，在按下復(fù)位鍵才能使主馬達運轉(zhuǎn)。
繼電器的品牌型號很多，但基本上包含以下功能：
